Every day Tanzanian children take the long walk to school in their uniforms. Strong, happy, frolicking kids, who go about their daily 2-hour walk there and back. By the time they get home, darkness sets in soon on the equator, and more than 70 % of the population do not have electricity.

In his Soma Factory Innocent produces backpacks with built-in solar panels, batteries and rechargeable lamps.

On their way to school the children wear those backpacks with their school things in them, and at the same time charge the solar cells. At night, the charged batteries in their lamps give them light to read and study by.

Innocent is an entrepreneur with a heart in the right place. Like Fons, he believes every child should have the opportunity to develop, and he is doing his bit in Tanzania. He visits all the schools in Tanzania, explains his plan and asks how many backpacks are needed. If he has enough money, the people in his factory can start producing them again. Innocent sees to it in person that the backpacks get tot the right place. The happy photographs are the radiant witnesses to it.

Back home, Fons tells his wife Petra about the awe-inspiring Tanzania and its beautiful inhabitants with whom Fons feels such a strong connection. Together they decide to support innoncent’s project and set up the solar Study Buddy foundation. A foundation with a special and practical mission: literally giving children a light in the darkness to study.
